Etalocin was, and still to a large extent is, a Crapsaccharine World.

Historical

Etalocin has a robust tradition of intellectual activity, especially in mathematics and music.

Elite boys are educated in rhetoric, poetry, math, music, science, and martial arts, before they get a university education in order to specialize into one or more roles in elite society. Elite girls also get a full education, enough for them to be independent (minus the martial arts; they're also taught how to act like ladies), but usually only courtesans and candidates for the king's wives undergo specialized education. One or more requirements can be waived for a child of exceptional ability.

The plebs are largely literate but uneducated and are forced to do menial labor and/or live in unsanitary places. Weird misfits (especially if they're male) within the elite are harshly penalized as well. The social cost of nonconformity was quite severe, and crimes were punished harshly (often by forced labor, torture, and death, in addition to public shaming).

Polyamory was and still is accepted in Etalocin cultures, though many people are monogamous.
