Etymology

From Old Pomorian marjan, Proto-Balto-Slavic *marja(n). Compare to Proto-Slavic *morje (from earlier *marja(n)), Old Prussian marī (“bay of the sea”), Lithuanian marios (“lagoon”, sometimes also “sea”). From Proto-Indo-European *móryo- (o-extention of *móri); compare to Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐍂𐌴𐌹 (marei), Old Irish muir, Sanskrit मर्यादा (maryādā), Latin mare.
