From East Kyrdan *nȳ (“star”), from Early Proto-Kyrdan *niwə (“star”). from Proto-Indo-European *h₂stḗr (“star”). Doublet of newa. Cognate with Kērsalur newa, Cirdamur ni, Old Sērsal nix.
