From Old Pomorian jāres, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jāˀras or *jāˀrāˀ, compare to Old Lithuanian jorė(“time to sow”), Proto-Slavic *jara (“summer; spring”). From Proto-Indo-European *yeh₁r-; compare to Ancient Greek ὥρα (hṓra, “time, season, year”), Old High German: jār, English year.
