Carnian

Alternative forms

  • -na

Etymology

Inherited from Old Carnian -ina, from a merger of Proto-Slavic *-ina and Proto-Slavic *-yni.

Pronunciation

Suffix

-ina

  1. Suffix appended to words to create feminine nouns.
  2. Suffix appended to words to create feminine counterparts of masculine nouns., -ess
    bog + ‎-ina → ‎bogina "goddess"
    Carnian + ‎-ina → ‎Carnianna "Carnian" (female)

Usage notes

  • -na is the contracted form due to syncope, occurs usually when preceded by a sonorant.
  • Sense 2 is preferred in Modern Carnian, replacing the previous -sa and -ca which are now considered archaic and derogatory due to diminutive connotations.
  • Sense 2 is derived from Proto-Slavic *-yni and thus does not cause palatalization of the preceding consonant.
