Inherited from Old Carnian -ina, from a merger of Proto-Slavic *-ina and Proto-Slavic *-yni.

    bog (god) + ‎-ina → ‎bogina (goddess)
    Carnian + ‎-ina → ‎Carnianna (Carnian (female))

Usage notes

  • -na is the contracted form due to syncope, occurs usually when preceded by a sonorant.
  • Sense 2 is preferred in Modern Carnian, replacing the previous -sa and -ca which are now considered archaic and derogatory due to diminutive connotations.
  • Sense 2 is derived from Proto-Slavic *-yni and thus does not cause palatalization of the preceding consonant.
