Etymology
From Old Pomorian areljes, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *arels; compare to Old Prussian arelis, Lithuanian erelis, Latvian ērglis (from earlier er(e)lis. The initial "e" resulted from an assimilation in East Baltic), Proto-Slavic *orьlъ .The -ь- sound instead of expected -e- has not been explained yet, however -ь- could have derived directly from -e- as a hypercorrection (ь under the circumflex accent sounded similar to e).
From Proto-Indo-European *h₃érō. Compare to Ancient Greek ὄρνῑς (órnīs), Old Irish irar, Old High German aro.
