Sound changes in rough order of occurrence

  • -ns- clusters are reduced to -s-
  • -rs- clusters are reduced to -s-: cf. dorsum > fr. dos, es. Dueso
  • Initial gl- and bl- are reduced to l-: cf. globus, blasphemo
  • Medial -tl- clusters and medial become -cl- clusters
  • Medial -pl- clusters that fail to become -bl- clusters become -cl- clusters: normally occurs after nasals and other intervening consonants (amplus > es. ancho), but occasionally occurs spontaneously as well. Cf. copula > collo
  • Word initial Cl- clusters merge with cl-
  • Word initial c~g voicing distinction blurred: cf. es. cattus > gato, es. planus > llano, pt. flamma > chama, neo/sic. platea > chiazza, one Italian word with g- > chi-, etc.
  • gl > jl > lj

Later changes

  • Dissimilation of nasals and laterals occur: cf. globus > novelo (Pt.) (see also: Romanian, Pt, Es)
