Etymology
From Proto-Valtamic *ålṗakår, further etymology unknown. Most likely a shortened form of *ålḳåṗakår, from Proto-Celtic *wolkos + Proto-Italic *pāgos (whence Latin pāgus). This word originally referred to any foreign settlement, but later narrowed to German(ic) settlements, and then further to a German state. See Cansakar for a very similar case, but with narrowing towards Italy instead.
At some point, folk-etymologies re-analyzed words such as Alfakar, Cansakar, and Këľzokër as derivations using the suffix -kër, which led to the back-formation of the adjective alfa.
