Etymology

From earlier vɛʌ (ghel) by analogy with other prefixed prepositions, from Classical Phrygian vɑʌ (ʿal), from Proto-Semitic *ʕalay-. Cognate with Hebrew עַל (ʿal), Akkadian 𒌋𒅗 (eli), Arabic عَلَى (ʿalā), among others.
