From Old Grekelin Ρουμιός (rumios), from Medieval Greek Ῥωμαῖος, derived from the Byzantine (Roman) Empire, from Latin Roma which in turn is of unknown origin. Cognate with English Roman, Greek Ρωμιός among others.
