Etymology

Highly suppletive verb with forms provided by different Latin verbs:

  • The 1SG and 3SG present indicative forms, all of the non-present indicative tenses, all of the subjunctive ones (except the fïa-stem present), the 2nd person imperatives, and the fuṭur future participle are from the respective forms of sum, esse;
  • The 2SG present indicative form is from the 2SG future indicative form eris;
  • The plural present indicative forms, the fïa-stem present subjunctive, and the non-second person imperative forms are from the respective forms of fīō, fierī;
  • The infinitive and all participles (except fuṭur) are from the respective forms of assideō, assidēre.

Of the two future participles, sissur is used in a locative sense; fuṭur is used in all other instances.
