Alternative forms
A mixed-stem noun with roots *száw, szä́w would be expected, however after centuries of use as a pluralia tantum, the singular was reanalysed as a soft stem by analogy with the plural when it was revived for use in the names of particular seas, e.g. Mézszew ("Mediterranean Sea").
