Siwa
Pronunciation
Etymology
Etymology uncertain, but two theories exist:
- From sivva, marked plural of retema. The former means “foxes” but also “children”. There is some diachronic evidence that the root *re- had lost its evolved plural in favor of *si after Siwa people adopted it as their name.[1]
- From sivi (“honey”). Traditional Siwa cosmogony features a drop of honey hit by lightning, and it is considered a holy substance.
Noun
siųa anim (marked sỷdi)
- Siwa, Siwa language
