Netagin (Nëtuoghin) is an Ashkenazi Hebrew-, Sami-, and Polish-inspired Shalaic language. It is related to Shalaian but phonologically is less conservative.
About
External history
This is the fifth reincarnation of Netagin (my past Hebrew-inspired conlangs). I'm probably going to take a lot of aesthetic influence from Windermere and Skellan.
Internal history
Netagin, like its relative Shalaian, is also inspired by Hebrew and Philadelphia English but Netagin is more Judeo-Gaelic and Galatian-inspired than Shalaian.
Internal² history
Shalaian and Netagin belong to a common sprachbund. They are two different branches of the Shalaic family that convergently evolved to be head-initial and ergative.
Phonology
A "Polish Welsh but more Judeo-Gaelic Hebrew"
Vowels: /i y ɨ u ai ø~ay ɛ ɔ a eə oə/ i u y ó ae au e o a ea oa
Consonants:
- soft mutation:
- p b t d h ts dz tʂ dʐ tɕ dʑ k g q (p b t d h c dz cz dż ć dź k g q) -> b v d ð dz z dʐ ʐ dʑ ʑ g ɣ ɴ (b v d dh dz z dż ż dź ź g gh l)
- older geminates (from creaky voice) become fricatives: p’ t’ tɬ’ tʃ’ k’ q’ h -> f θ ʂ ʂ x χ s (f th sz sz ch lh s)
- fricatives: s ʂ ɕ h (s sz ś h)
- others: m n ɴ (historical L~historical ʕ) r w y ʔ
Stress is always penultimate.
Gemination is phonemic: nC -> CC → hCC
Morphology
Nouns
Grammatical gender is animate vs inanimate, and is not marked unlike in Shalaian.
Plurals are bad:
- i-affection: czowan, czuwen 'cloud'
- reduplication: raudżos, rodżaudżos 'fern'
- -óg: folar, folaróg 'rose'
dual is -odd /od:/
The definite article is ki (cognate to the Shalaian definite article ħi):
- The animate singular uses the aspiration mutation (from the abstract-honorific singular *-ʀ)
- The inanimate singular uses no mutation
- The plural uses the soft mutation
