From Middle Jovlish ýþa, plural of ýþ (wave), from Old Jovlish ýþ, from Old English ȳþ. Cognate to Middle English ythe, Icelandic unnur. Displaced Middle Jovlish sǽ, ultimately from Old English sǣ, except in compounds such as şıveş and şın.
