Etymology

From Old Grekelin έλιος (eljos), from Pre-Grekelin έλιον (eljon) with influence of Medieval Greek ἥλιος in the gender, both stemming from Ancient Greek ἥλιος (hḗlios). Cognate with Latin sol (Hence English solar), Sanskrit सूर्य (sūrya), Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬭 (huuar) and Persian خور (xwar).
