Etymology

From Swahili macho, plural of jicho "eye". Sense 1 "vigilant" from the idea of having eyes in the back of one's head; cf. Spanish tener ojos en la nuca. Sense 2 "macho" from English macho, itself from Spanish macho "male" and doublet of macho.
