From Old Grekelin ζ̌εματάω, from Medieval Greek ζεματάω, ζεματίζω, from Koine Greek ζέμα, from Ancient Greek ζέω, from Proto-Indo-European *yes- (To boil, to foam or to ferment). Cognate with Modern Greek ζεστός and ζεματάω, English yeast and Welsh ias.
