Proto-Nanno-Pithecian (PNP) split into two main branches, Nannic, from which the Dwarven language is descended; and Pithecian, from which the Pygmaean language is descended. Despite the near constant state of diglossa for many speakers of both branches (with each of the branches having its respective spot in the limelight over time), the two branches still split considerably cleanly, which each branch having its own main strategy for dealing with the ancestral proto-language's phonology.
