From Post-Gothic *biχilja, in turn from Latin vigilia. Cf. náubaímbaír ("November") in the Gothic calendar for another instance of Latin v being realised as b in Gothic. For a similar semantic development, cf. Old Irish féil ("festival"), Welsh gŵyl ("festival, holiday"), Polish Wigilia ("Christmas Eve").
