Aoife O'Flaherty (An Bhlaoighne and Irish: Aoife Ní Fhlaithbheartaigh An Bhl. /ˈao̞jfe̞ niː ˈfʰlajt̪ʰbʱe̞art̪ajgʱ/, Irtan Irish: /'iːfʲə nʲiː ˈl̪ˠahəɾˠt̪ˠiː/ Ăn Yidiș and Hebrew: עדנה ני פֿל׳אַהארתּיהּ Irtan Ăn Cayzăn /ˈɛðnə nɪ ˈwahərt̪ʰɪh/, Irta Modern Hebrew: [ˈe̞ðnʌ ni ˈlahe̞ɹt̪ʰi]) is an Irtan Cualandian conlanger, video game composer and video game developer of Irish-Jewish descent. She is a native speaker of Irish and Quelfton English, is fluent in Ăn Yidiș and Irta Modern Hebrew, and can read Albionian, JBA, Classical Arabic, and Old Irish. She is a trans woman and a non-believing but moderately observant Reform Jew. She is best known for her game Verse:Méich Bhaonnáiqh (placeholder name) and its associated conlang, An Bhlaoighne.

Her favorite language families are Semitic and Albionian, in addition to her native Celtic.

She has red hair.

Disclaimer

The premise for this character and her languages are mainly Âthi Trydhen's. Aoife is also based partly on Edna Ashe, one of Inthar's old characters, and Inthar contributed ideas for some languages and is now stepping back (as of February 7, 2022). We do not intend to publish a Méich Bhaonnáiqh game for public consumption.

Biography

Aoife was raised in a secular Jewish family but became more practicing in her adult life.

Aoife is self-taught in most of her areas of expertise. She has a CS degree from ___ University; for her honors project she wrote a machine learning-based parser for glossing Old and Middle Irish texts. She also found all delta-rational chords in edos below 31.

Conlangs

Aoife draws much of her inspiration from Semitic languages and most of her languages are directly inspired by Hebrew or Aramaic, in phonology, lexicon, grammar, history, or a combination thereof. Irish (both Old and Modern) is another common inspiration; both Irish and Hebrew have post-vocalic lenition as part of their diachronics. Other inspirations include Eadlan. Stress-induced allomorphy, a feature of both Tiberian Hebrew and Old Irish, is a recurring theme in her conlangs. The Hebrew influence in each of these conlangs is different, however:

  • An Bhlaoighne has Easter eggs from Hebrew vocab.
  • Ditab is inspired phonologically by Tiberian Hebrew
  • Ciêng is more loose, but it has stress-induced allomorphy (however, its overall diachronics is more inspired by Irish)
  • Shemroghian is diachronically Aramaic-inspired
  • Tsrovesh is loosely Modern Hebrew

However, many other languages which she has read about also influence the conlangs.

Her conlangs are often borderline kitchen-sinky and jokey/unnaturalistic (Tsrovesh and Shemroghian are notable exceptions) but she should still manage to make it work. People joke that Old Irish is an Aoife conlang ("What if an IE language had Hebrew begadkefat (but also other mutations) and VSO word order, and stem allomorphy way more unpredictable than Tiberian Hebrew")
