Wug Nlab is a loglang. In its setting Technoquintlan, it is one of the two main academic languages spoken around fT 2700 (around 2450 in the Gregorian calendar), alongside Akademiesprache.

External history

To mirror the Hlou-Shum languages being spoofs of Indo-European languages under a somewhat Hmongic framework, Cole decided to spoof his old conlang Riemannic in this manner. His first idea was a slightly divergent Hlouic language with loans from Windermere, but it was shortly scrapped because he felt it wouldn't work (and also partly due to his inexperience with Windermere).

His next idea was to make Hlou Riemannic mathematically-based, which initially was the concept for Quintlanic. However, due to the fact that he ran out of ideas (or rather, was too overwhelmed with bad ideas) for Quintlanic, he decided to merge that project with his favourite conlang Schlaub to form a kind of "Future Schlaub", if you will.

Internal history

The music theorist and linguist Soha Plu designed a concept of a philosophical language (Wug Bub as he called it) while he was on sabbatical in Quintlopetl (Hlou: Klin-Tlän). However, his idea never caught on with his fellow colleagues.

Around fT 2400, there was a great economic collapse in both Terra and Tricin (similar to the Collapse in Rosenfelder's Incatena setting). This resulted in the loss of, notably, Scellan as a lingua franca on Tricin and early 21st-century English as a lingua franca on Earth, which was quickly replaced with Clofabosin on both worlds. However, it did not enjoy the status of a lingua franca as Scellan and English previously.

To remedy this, many other solutions were tried out. Most notably, on Terra, there was a great revival of Latino sine flexione, mostly in South America and the Northwestern Mediterranean, but on Tricin, a kind of analytic Clofabolocin was used in Etatalma. However, both solutions did not last long.

The superpowers of both worlds decided to try making lingua francas of their own, and the Germanic-speaking Europeans and the Hlou-Shum were the first to create them. Unlike Esperanto a few hundred years before, their conlangs - Akademiesprache and Wug Nlab respectively - were much more successful in reach. The former was created by the applied mathematicians, biologists, chemists, and specialists in other applied fields, and Wug Nlab was created by pure mathematicians, physicists, programmers, and specialists in other 'pure' fields.

What is notable is the inclusion of astronomers and musicians in the group that created Wug Nlab, which could be a kind of revival of the quadrivium. However, they did not have much imagination: they decided to use Plu's Wug Bub (known here as Quintlanic) as one of its bases.

Changes from fT 2300 to fT 2400

Sound and orthography changes

The following sound and orthographical changes happened:

• All unaspirated voiceless plosives and affricates became voiced (but still unaspirated) due to influence from Clofabosin, and later, English

• z, tz, dz, ntz, ndz (/s̪, ts̪ʰ, ts̪, ⁿts̪ʰ, ⁿdz̪/ -> /θ, tθʰ, dð (due to the previous change), ⁿtθ, ⁿdð/)

This was a result of second-language Hlou learners failing to turn dental fricatives into sibilants.

• ei, au, äu (/əi, əu, əũ/ -> /ai, au, ɔʏ/)
• r (/ʐ/ -> /ɹ/)
• j (/ʒ/ -> /j/)
• ä (/ã/ -> /æ/)
• ö (/õ/ -> /ø/)

These were a result of a 'literally read' version of the German-based orthography devised by German-Clofabian Hmongophile and linguist Otto Hans Arcaschloss Schngellstein, grandson of Shlomo Schngellstein (now changed to Shlomo Kuaishi), and are somewhat similar to the variety of vowels used in Schlaub Glaß.

• schm, schml, schn, schnr -> sp, spl, st, str (/m̥, m̥ˡ, n̥, ɳ̊/ -> /spʰ, spˡʰ, stʰ, sʈʰ/)

This was a result of the "Gloobification" of Schlaub, turning voiceless nasals into presibilanted plosives. The Schngellstein orthography was updated to reflect that, but not, strangely, the featural script.

• schl -> lj (/ɬ/ -> /ʎ/)

This was a result of people speaking quickly and as a result turning the lateral fricative into a lateral approximant.

The eszett tone -ß was merged to the -s tone. In addition, nouns are not capitalized anymore.

Grammatical changes

The head direction changed from head-initial to head-final due to the influence of Earth Mandarin. There is also a particle that changes verbs to nouns, namely kin, borrowed from Clofabosin.

Great Orthographical Reform

By this time, the orthography devised by Arcaschloss Schngellstein was gaining traction amongst people in Europe and Clofabolocin due to the simplicity of the orthography, but the main oppressors of it were obviously the Hlou, who wanted to keep their featural script, as they felt the Schngellstein orthography might introduce new stereotypes in Terran people who haven't heard about the Hlou. (At the time.interplanetary travel was expensive.)

At this time the notion of political correctness was taken very seriously, and so the Hlou won. However, Arcaschloss Schngellstein and his supporters protested against it, so Halceonib Plu Hopfai (fT 2300 Hlou: Plud Höß-Pfein), grandson of Plu Soha, made a compromise orthography, using Pinyin as a base for it.

The battle of orthographies raged on till this day, and so there are at least six orthographies for Wug Nlab, and no one can decide which one to use.

The Battle for Wug Nlab

Plu Hopfai could be considered the first true speaker of Wug Nlab as he was the first to merge together the grammar of Wug Bub and the lexicon of Schlaub. This made Schngellstein happy as he finally can make another joke orthography for a Hlou-Shum based language.

By this time the Clofabosin people, who were long time allies of the Hlou, thought Schngellstein was a maniac, making fun of their so-called "brothers in Vansen".

However, Schngellstein was pissed off as he could not find an obscure European language with an interesting aesthetic to spoof Wug Nlab, so he reached out to Vlamnach Kleloch, the only Zlïcean grandson of Harsforden Parker-Cole. This is because the people who made the Latin-based orthographies for Zlïke were also friends and colleagues of Schngellstein and were interested in spoofing European languages in their orthographies.

He told him that Cole made a conlang called Riemannic and he had his old notes with him, so he sent them to Schngellstein. This is where we get the Riemannic spoof orthography for Wug Nlab.

• Logography-based (as a kind of "reversion back to the past")
