From Middle Jovlish ýþa, plural of ýþ (wave), from Old Jovlish ýþ, from Old English ȳþ. Cognate to Middle English ythe, Icelandic unnur. Displaced Middle Jovlish , ultimately from Old English , except in compounds such as şıveş and şın.
