Ishtar spoke to her father/Cwengâr is the incipit of a famed section in the Epic of Gilgamesh, an epic Mesopotamian poem, and one of the earliest surviving works of literature. |
- Adapted from an English translation of the Akkadian version, from Tablet VI.
Tengâr Ishar dà le nàlh, hÀnu, rŷ cwâr:
"Â hàl! Pelârh rhà êlhônàf norhogw tash,
pen Gwônugw lho G'hôlagamesh gwô lho n âcwemaff.
Amelârh rhà êlhônàf norhogw tash,
O Dôrhôc'hâl ty gwôn hâraff nêramâf,
O Dômôd ty hêramâf ngânâcw ô gwômesôlh ty ud lhur nâg'h âramâf
O Dôngône ty ud tagw gwônàf shelhàf!
O Dône gwônàf ffen ral shelhàf!
Spoke Ishar to her father Ànu with this speech;
"O Father! Give the Bull of the Gods unto me
for he may kill Gwôlagamesh in his halls.
If you do not give the Bull of the Gods unto me,
Then I will drum on the gates of the dead lands,
Then I will crush the edges of the gate and allow the gate to lie low,
Then I will allow that the dead may eat the living,
Then the dead shall be more than the living!
